SUICIDE AT TWERTON
Philip Parker, aged 45, a fish hawker, who lives at 3, High-street, Twerton, was found hanging dead from a beam in an outhouse behind his shop on Monday morning [August 30, 1897]. Parker was a widower with no children, and for some time had been living alone in the house. He had been in financial difficulties for some time, and there was very little about his house, deceased having sold his things. He had stated that he would sooner die than go to the workhouse. Parker was an old soldier, having served with the 43rd Regiment in India, and afterwards was in the reserve till 1884.
