  • Notes
    • Buried at Sourton Susanna Ellis 7 Jul 1775

This William may have married previously to a Dorothy as there are two baptisms at Sourton for children of William and Dorothy: Gyles in 1713 but he dies in 1716 and Dorothy dies in 1720. Therefore, this William may have married a second time to an Elizabeth. So, I need to chase down a marriage between a William Ellis and a Dorothy. There are quite a few pages missing from the Sourton register throughout the early 1700s.

This is a tentative choice for father of John Ellis. The children of John, James and a Henry Ellis, also residing at Sourton, seem to have parallels in names that also parallel the names of the couple William and Elizabeth Ellis early in Sourton.

Sourton register appears to be missing baptisms from Dec 1727 to 30 Dec 1730.

In No. 2, p. 68 of the Notices the Rev. Edmund Elys Rector of East Allington co. Devon, and his son of the same name also Rector 1693, are mentioned. They are probably of the family of Ellis of Lepton in the Supplement; for according to Granger's List of Engraved Portraits one of these Rectors had his portrait engraved with the arms of Ellis of Kiddall and aged 28, 1662,. who is also mentioned in Wood's Ahtenae Oxonienses: He was probably the "E. E." a relative of the Rev. Clement Ellis (p. 3, Supp.) who addressed to him some Latin verses.
